Reasons to commit to someone:
- if i wanted to raise kids
- if i wanted to communicate to someone that they are THAT special to me
- if i felt as though i should succumb to societal pressure
Reasons to not commit to someone:
- if i am not sure yet if this person is most likely going to to work out long term
- if i am interested in meeting more people in a romantic context to learn more about what i want/don't want in a relationship, and to help fend off feelings of neediness
- if i want to keep a (mutual) willingness to walk away from the relationship to keep interactions more positive
- if i enjoy being single

After walking over Mount Kurama, I ate lunch at a little place called hirobun on the other side of the mountain from Kurama. The shop proprietor whom I ended up calling "Jun-San," to his great entertainment, spoke only a few phrases in English. But we had a great time trying to communicate. I told him his food was oishii, and he was thrilled. He even grabbed some other customers, the mochi cook, and some some people off of the street in order to help translate. In addition to my tofu udon, Jun-San gave me some pretty amazing mochi and some ume koba cha (i don't know if I remembered that correctly). If you find yourself in the area, i heartily recommend the place. Tell him that you know "Tanaka-san," and he'll probably be tickled pink.
I think the place I went to was further up the hill than the one featured on that website. It was the furthest restaurant up the street on the right side (as of today). Jun-san called someone on the phone to place my order, and the food arrived by foot from somewhere downhill.

In Kurama, many houses are constructed in the traditional kyoto style with wood. Many houses feature the same red plastic bucket sitting out front filled with water and painted with three white characters, the middle of which was the character for "fire."
On the train there, the conductor came up to me to ask me for my fare. When I asked him how much it was, he made sure to rattle off the number as quickly as he possibly could. Either my Japanese accent has improved a lot, or he wasn't in such a great mood today.
While walking up the road in Kurama, I recognized enough Japanese characters to read "kurama onsen," which meant that it was time to turn around before i ended up walking over the mountains to the next prefecture.
Drank a "CALPIS WELL" today. I think I like the CALPIS soda better. I also drank a "Sour Royal," which was quite good, although I couldn't tell you what it was like. The light colored soft drinks seem to all taste like Squirt, except not quite.

Suematsu-san has invited me to talk to a group (probably his class) at Kyoto University. He pointed out that I could put this on my resume. All of the two professors that I can think of have this great skill of being able to identify the things that will be good for their students. I wish there were a class where I could learn how to do that too.

Hidden behind one of the pagodas at nanzenji temple is a small shrine and a path that leads up into the mountains to the east of kyoto. Unfortunately, the best view from the top of that path is of a bunch of tree trunks.

As far as I can tell, bicyclists here in Kyoto silently go the direction they want to go and weave around cars, other bicycles, and pedestrians wherever there seems to be space. I think I don't have the feel for it, because I constantly felt like I was about to be run over.

I found a graveyard behind a temple here in Kyoto. It was dusk, and there were hundreds of crows flying around, sitting on graves, and cawing. I wandered in to take some pictures and, while I was there, the temple guard locked the gate between the temple and the graveyard. Luckily, he noticed me trying to climb back over the fence, and let me out the front gate where I had parked the bike.

Today something caught my eye in an arcade i passed in kyoto on Suematsu-san's bike. I turned around and went back to look, and it was two kids playing this arcade game with about 9 buttons and falling colored blocks on the screen. The goal of the game was to hit the button corresponding to the block as it reached the bottom of the screen. Sometimes there would be three or four buttons that you would need to press at the same time, and the button press combinations were happening about four per second. The kids playing looked like they were 7 years old. But then again, everyone looks young here.
The other day, I saw what looked like a 5 year old making a phone call from a public pay phone. When I was 5 years old, I cried all the time and barely knew what was going on around me.

on the way from kyoto to kitayama, i went through the turnstiles for the subway without my large backpack which i had left in a coin locker in kyoto. i didnt realize this until i had gone two stations away. i turned around and the agent at the gate in kyoto was nice enough to let me out to get my backpack and let me back in afterward, even though he didnt speak any english.

just went to a bakery and bought three bread items and some semi foul yogurt drink in a box. the box drink did come with a telescoping straw. it took me a minute to figure out how to deploy it. it felt thick and heavy -- like the drink cans here. japan doesnt have the super cheap drink craze that we do i guess.

the Gueen concert was loud. I wish I had brought some earplugs. I:m deaf in my right ear right now.
the concert has made me want to go clubbing.
Akihabara was like Simlim Square in Singapore, but bigger. I don:t think that there are many places in the world where you can have shops selling power drills and CDrs and not much else.
Shoko and I are in similar situations.

if i say something to someone, ideally i would believe in it enough that i wouldn:t back off from it later. in other words, i ideally wouldn:t contradict myself later; i wouldn:t try to qualify what i said after i saw that it hurt someone:s feelings.
of course, this means that sometimes i would need to think about what i was saying a little bit more beforehand so that it came across more tactfully, or more accurately.

most of the temples in nikko do not allow photographs to be taken inside. perhaps the photograph would sap the reservoir of holiness and spirituality that blankets the inside of these shrines.
right now, three stern golden figures tower over me. sternly.
maybe the no photograph policy is because these gods dont like their pictures taken.

A tip for travellers to japan: bring shoes that come off easily, as you will be putting them on and taking them off any time you enter someone's house, a shrine, a temple, and certain restaurants.
I took the Shinkansen (bullet train) for the first time today. Although I boarded from Ueno station (a pretty big transfer terminal which presumably sees a lot of tourists) the signs on the Shinkansen platform were not very helpful, and I ended up boarding a reserved double decker car. About 5 minutes into the ride, the conductor came along to presumably ask for my reservation. Luckily, even though he didnt speak english, he made me a reservation downstairs in the same car. Unfortunately, I could no longer see anything out the window.
I stayed on the train a few stops until Utsunomiya, and transferred to a local line that took me to the town of Nikko.
